Every successful project starts with clear goals. Without them, we’re just coding without direction. These goals will guide decisions, prioritize work, and help measure success as BetCycle evolves from idea to production.
🎯 Primary Goals
1. Build the BetCycle Application
BetCycle is a prediction game for cycling’s three Grand Tours: Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España. Before each stage, players pick one rider. Your rider’s finishing position becomes your points for that stage, and at the end of the race, the player with the fewest points wins.
The goal is a production-ready application that could serve real users, not a prototype or a tutorial project.
What this means:
- Complete authentication and authorization
- Reliable data storage and transactions
- Real-time updates and live data
- Error handling and recovery
- Security built-in from day one
- Performance optimization
Why it matters: Most learning projects stop at “it works on my laptop.” We’re going all the way to production-grade.
2. Master the Deployment Pipeline
Implement a complete CI/CD pipeline that takes code from commit to production automatically.
What this means:
- Automated testing at every stage
- Automated builds and deployments
- Multiple environments (dev, staging, production)
- Zero-downtime deployments
- Easy rollbacks when things go wrong
- Deployment confidence
Why it matters: The deployment pipeline is the heart of DevOps. If you can’t deploy safely and frequently, you can’t deliver value continuously.
3. Embrace Infrastructure as Code
Every piece of infrastructure defined in version-controlled code.
What this means:
- Docker Compose for local development
- Terraform for cloud infrastructure
- Kubernetes manifests for orchestration
- Reproducible environments
- Infrastructure changes through pull requests
- Easy disaster recovery
Why it matters: “It works on my machine” disappears when infrastructure is code. Everything becomes reproducible, reviewable, and recoverable.
4. Share the Learning Journey
Document every significant decision, success, and failure openly.
What this means:
- Quest Log posts for major milestones
- Clear explanation of why decisions were made
- Sharing challenges and how they were overcome
- Creating reusable patterns and templates
- Building a resource for others
Why it matters: The best way to solidify learning is to teach others.
🎓 Secondary Goals
5. Explore Modern DevOps Tools
Get hands-on experience with current industry-standard tools and practices.
Tools to explore:
- Container orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
- CI/CD (GitHub Actions)
- Monitoring (Prometheus, Grafana)
- Logging (ELK/Loki)
- Platform Engineering tools
Why it matters: DevOps is a rapidly evolving field. Hands-on experience is the best way to understand these tools truly.
6. Create Reusable Patterns
Build a foundation that can be applied to future projects.
What we’ll create:
- Project templates and starter kits
- Documented patterns and practices
- Reusable CI/CD pipelines
- Infrastructure modules
- Best practices guides
Why it matters: No project should have to start from scratch. Build once, reuse everywhere.
